Nathu Ram was born with polio and was also a child labourer. BBA activists had rescued him and had brought him to Bal Ashram for his rehabilitation. After a 6 month bridge course and vocational training, Nathu returned to his village, Kurgavan in Madhya Pradesh where he was admitted into a school in class 5. During his stay at the Bal Ashram, he was also taken to Jaipur for treatment of his leg, where he received a prosthetic leg.
In a school where children from well-to-do families also studied, Nathu Ram topped not only his class in the Class 5 board exams, but also the entire state. The Madhya Pradesh Government had earlier announced that the parent of the student who scores the highest marks would be appointed the President of the Parent Teachers Association. As per the Government guidelines, only when the PTA president and the Village Aseembly sign, can the funds related to the development of school be released. Recently, a sum of Rs. 6 Lakh was allotted to the school by the Government.
Nathu believes that the physical handicap is not an obstacle to his studies. If a person wills to do anything and receives the right direction, he/she can achieve anything, says this young boy. He wishes to become a child rights activist when he grows up. |
