June 25, 2008: Today under the surveillance of Bachpan Bachao Andolan activist Mr. Rakesh Senger, police, and labour department a rescue operation was carried out in Indore’s Sarafa Bazaar, which is a big jewellery making area. A total of 12 children were rescued in the rescue operation today. They were found to be working under extremely hazardous and oppressing conditions in cramped up room with cooking gas cylinders kept behind them. They were made to work for 12 to 15 hours every day without food or water. They were given Rs 20/- every week to eat food, there was no monthly income given to them.
They were brought to Indore by middle men from Rajasthan’s Pali District and West Bengal’s Burdwan district. From the 12 children who were rescued, seven of them could be saved rest of the children were made to flee from the rescue site by the owner, in the presence of the labor officials and police. They were saved under the Child Labor Act 1986 and Juvenile Justice Act 2000; however Bachpan Bachao Andolan is demanding from the District Magistrate to employ Bonded Labor Act as well. |
