BBA Rescues 19 Bonded Child Labourers from Plastic Factories
   
 
   
 

New Delhi , 8 June 2007:   Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement) in collaboration with Delhi State level department and police were successful and rescuing 19 bonded child labourers. These children were trapped in small plastic factories exposed to extremely hazardous condition. They were manufacturing plastic slippers (shoes) and various other small items in rooms filled with plastic dust and fumes. Children handled dangerous chemicals and detergents. BBA activists, and the local labour officers jointly conducted rescue operations in about a dozen factories in Narela Industrial Area, North-East Delhi.

When the team entered the factories, they found that the children were kept in locked and guarded rooms. The children worked, cooked, ate and slept in the same place. Most of these children and adolescents were found to have been trafficked from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, expect 13-year-old Sanjay who was trafficked from Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Sukhram, Pawan, Deepak and Saroj Kumar said they were seventeen years old but did not look a day beyond 14 years. Speaking with BBA activists they confessed that they had been tutored by the employers to lie about their age, the amount they received as wages and the nature of their work. Most of the have been lured by the promise of good wages but had not been paid any cash wages for at least the last 6 months to one year.

BBA has gathered information that a large number of children and adolescents are illegally trapped in plastic factories in extremely hazardous conditions. The organisation has filed complaints with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of North-East Delhi and the Deputy Labour Commissioner. The raid was conducted around noon when the city reeling under scorching heat of around 44 oC. A team of 25 BBA activists and volunteers led by international child rights activist and founder of BBA, Kailash Satyarthi along with the organisations' Chairperson R S Chaurasia and National Secretaries Rakesh Sengar and Bhuwan Ribhu planned and conducted the rescue operation.

Satyarthi speaking from the rescue site said, "We are trying that the children and youth be officially released under the Bonded Labour Act 1976 and Child Labour Act 1986. This will enable each one of them become entitled for statutory rehabilitation. Till the bureaucratic formalities are completed these children will remain at the Bachpan Bachao Andolan's rehabilitation centre Mukti Ashram. Following the receipt of the release certificates these children would be repatriated to their villages and rehabilitated."
