38 child labourers rescued

Thirty eight child labourers were rescued from Nabi Karim area in Central Delhi on Saturday morning by the activists of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and the city police. The raid and rescue team included three sub divisional magistrates of Pahargaj, Darayganj and Karol Bagh. The Delhi Police team was lead by Assistant Police Commissioner Mr Pushpendra Kumar,Others who were present in the raid were Child Welfare Committee and National Secretary BBA, Mr. Rakesh Senger.

All the rescued children, aged between 10 years and 14 years, were working as child labourers at various leather bag manufacturing units and eateries in the area.

According to a thirteen-year-old rescued boy, who was working at one of the manufacturing units, the children were forced to work in the most inhuman conditions and after  the days works they were locked in a small room.

The children were paid a meagre amount of Rs 40-50 for a week. They were not given anything to eat on Sundays and some of the children had been starved for over two days.

While most of them hailed from the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, three were trafficked from Nepal on the pretext of providing a job and a life, better than what in which they were living in their home towns.

Mr. R. S. Chaurasia, Chairperson, BBA, said, "These kids were not even in proper clothing when we conducted the raid. Most of them were brought here on the promise of better facilities than what they were provided back home. Nine persons have been arrested from the spot and will be charged under the juvenile justice Act, bonded labour Act and child labor Act.''

"These children deserve education. This is their age to study. The culprits will be brought to book for exploiting them,'' said Chaurasia.

After a medical examination, the children were sent to  Mukti Ashram, a rehabilitation centre near Burari,  before they are handed over to their parents once the case formalities are complete.
