"We have been making steady progress, and the children are now under the care of the local government.  As our policy requires, the vendor with which our order was originally placed will be required to provide the children with access to schooling and job training, pay them an ongoing wage and guarantee them jobs as soon as they reach the legal working age. We will now work with the local government and with Global March to ensure that our vendor fulfils these obligations.  

Our investigation into this matter continues and we will take immediate and appropriate action with the vendor and their unauthorised sub-contractor.

We reiterate that under absolutely no circumstances is it acceptable for children to produce or work on products.   We have a strong track record of tackling challenges like this head on and feel it's our responsibility to do whatever we can to make the situation better.  We are working to make sure some good can come out of this.

As you know, we have stopped working with 23 factories last year for violation of our code.  This product will not be sold, and Gap Inc. is convening an urgent meeting with all of our suppliers in the region this week to reinforce our policy against child labour.   We will continue to work with government, NGOs, trade unions and other stakeholder organisations in an effort to end the use of child labour."
