The magnitude of the child labor problem is so huge that single-handed intervention can never solve the problem. We believe that sustainable end to child labour, forced labour and trafficking cannot be achieved without the active will and support of the corporate community. There is need for not only intra-sectoral alliance building but also inter-sectoral coalition. Unless we rope in multiple stakeholders like Human Rights Groups, Teachers Union, Trade Union and political parties and Corporates etc, the problem of child labour will remain long unresolved. Even before the phrase CSR was being actively used, BBA under the leadership of its founder, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, had initiated its first anti chid labour labelling system in the world.

Known as Rugmark, the concept began in 1993 wherein the exporters and the manufacturers of carpets in India, Nepal and Pakistan, and the importers placed in US, Germany and UK, pay a certain fee for third party monitoring and labelling against child labour in the carpet industry. This experiment gradually gained social acceptance and led to many such future activities in the sporting goods industry, cocoa industry, garments industry and many other.

Today, BBA represents a convergence platform of numerous stakeholders including the teachers union AIFTO (All India Federation of Teachers Organization) AIPTF (All India Primary Teachers Federation), various NGO’s, human rights groups, Corporates and trade unions numbering more than 750.

BBA has the credit of initiating its first anti chid labour labelling system in the world in the carpet industry in the form of Rugmark. The concept was initiated in 1993, exporters and manufacturers of carpets in India, Nepal and Pakistan, and the importers placed in US, Germany and UK, paid a certain fee for third party monitoring and labeling against child labour in the carpet industry. This experiment gradually gained social acceptance and led to many such future activities in the sporting goods industry, cocoa industry, garments industry and many other.

BBA adopted a model of movement where we have tried to address the problem holistically for a greater worldview. For example, the issue of child labour could only be solved through the long-term strategy of universalization of education. Therefore, our emphasis is not only identification, raid, rescue and rehabilitation but also to intensify our efforts for universalization of primary education. The BBA-CSR strategies involve not only raising resources from the corporate, but also working with them in improving the working condition in their supply chain.

  1. Currently, BBA is working in the garments industry with GAP Inc. in raising public awareness and also in developing a model system of supply chain monitoring to ensure that there is no child labour, bonded labour and trafficking in the places of production.
  2. We are working with AVEDA on elimination of child labour in the Mica mines of Jharkhand and providing education to children. BBA engages in ongoing CSR campaigns for resource mobilization.
  3. We have received immense resource-based support from Corporates like Hero Honda.
  4. LG India has organized events in collaboration with our organization and has generated huge funds for welfare of children.
  5. Hindustan Times have been our media partner for many of our campaigns.

Other Corporates which have collaborated with us in the past are:

Rugmark
"RUGMARK – the smiling carpet logo –serves as a model and forerunner and would certainly expand its ambit from carpets of other child made goods like matches & fireworks, glass & bangles, brassware, precious gems/ stones, handlooms, beedis and various items. It is a model for other South Asian countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. where millions of children are languishing in servitude in different economic sectors. This is a humble beginning and RUGMARK has miles to go to achieve its aims and objectives. It is certainly a Herculean task but not impossible is socially committed souls support and stand by for the noble cause of eradication of child servitude and restoration of the rights of the child.
