Out of 800 million illiterate adults across the globe in 2002, 70% live in nine countries belonging mostly to sub-Saharan Africa and East and South Asia, out of which India has 34% of the total illiterate population of the world India is home to more than a third of illiterate people in nine of the world’s most populous countries.

The fundamental right to education is denied to millions, despite the fact that having a fully educated society will end economic exploitation of children and break the cycle of poverty.
