ABOUT BAL ASHRAM

Bal Ashram in Rajasthan was established in 1998 as a rehabilitation cum training center of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement) to cater specifically to the special needs of victims of child labor. Bal Ashram is a transitory rehabilitation center for the rescued children giving them a feeling of cohesiveness, education and vocational training thereby helping them to become self-supportive, self-confident and to overcome the traumatic spell of the past. Bal Ashram has a multiplicative role to play in the society, of providing rehabilitation to rescued children from various types of exploitative situations and worst forms of labor, generating awareness among the community members on various social issues especially trafficking and forced labor, educating and empowering the children and the community members to fight for their rights, and replicating the efforts of the organization in the elimination of child labor. This is done through leadership building, furthering the message of social justice, equity and peace towards overall development in the villages. So far more than a 1000 children, who were trafficked for the purpose of forced labor, have been rehabilitated at the Bal Ashram. These children mostly bonded laborers working in brick kilns, carpet weaving, stone quarries, agriculture etc. belong to minority sections of the society and come from rural areas. Bal Ashram believes that systemic change can only be achieved when the victims themselves become the change agents against the exploitation and abuse that they have suffered.
